R U a SP ED teacher? My understanding is this: some districts hire a pool of sp ed teachers and may assign you to any position (that is their posted policy). Does your contract specify the exact position? If not, you may not have any recourse. BUT I DON'T REALLY KNOW! I feel so sorry for you, having your dreams crushed like that. Do you know any teachers in the district? Maybe they could refer you to the union for help.
Document everything, in case you take legal action. Good luck.
