Students love Seaman...
By Janie

Clip to ScrapBook
Our middle school teachers gr 5-8 collabed on a whole school project about Lewis & Clark. Last year, my class read a great book "Captain's Dog" written by Roland Smith. My students loved this book. We did several activities
throughout the book including: powerpoint presentations on other dogs, readers theatre, journal entries along the trail (citing flora and fauna,& feelings), made tapers, made jerkey, character searches, and at the end of the book we invited a guest speaker who had a Newfoundland named Biaggi. The anticipation of a Newfy visiting the classroom was great to see; took pictures, etc. We wrote
thank-you letters and completed a hallway mural showing the journey depicted by Seaman (some dog prints, some Seaman drawings). We presented the idea of inviting Roland Smith to our school next spring and it's a go!. A curriculum guide for teachers may also be requested (free). Mr. Smith is great to send a cd to teachers.
