This may sound bad but it is one way to find out. You could find a friend who would be willing to act as a prospective employer to call your references and see if anyone is bad mouthing you. There isn't much you can do if they are but at least you would know. Be sure you can trust the friend, though. Again, I know it sounds sneaky but when you just have to know....
