Pyramids...

I teach fourth grade and one of my students taught me this. It would probably work for 1st and 2nd fraders too.

When you are finished the word looks like a pyramid. My students loved this.
You can also do color coding. All consonants are black, vowels (except for e are red), e's are blue.
The S, C, H and L would be black and the O's would be red. This is a great activity. The students learn their spelling words while working on their consonants and vowels.

You can also have the students box their spelling words. This usually goes along with the word wall.
They trace around the word to get to know how the word is spelled. You can also play Hot Potato with their spelling words. You can pass around a small ball while music is playing (I usually played a catchy Grammar CD). When the music stops the person who has the ball or the last person who had the ball if it is in the air spells the word. You can choose a student to work the CD/Radio Player and have some of your higher achievers help you make sure that the students spell the words correctly. You can also play Hangman. I usually did this on Thursdays to help the students study for their Friday Spelling Test. Good Luck. I hope that these ideas will help!
