6-Traits
By Kim

Clip to ScrapBook
Yes, 6-Traits is a great way to teach kids about writing. My district has been doing it for 3-4 years now.

I teach 6th grade and we send the most time on the trait of organization because they need to go onto junior
high knowing how to construct a paragraph and multiparagrpah essays. I usually start with ideas. I have them keep a list in their binders of topics the are interested in for free choice writing. Then I teach org. so we canget a head start on that one--it is deep. Voice is the hardest, but I usually teach a lot through poetry lessons. Sent. Fluency works in that category as well. Word
choice is always a fun one that I try to do at the beginning of the year so we can work on abolishing "graveyard" words all year--see message board for info. on graveyard words. Conventions are always interspersed with the rest of the traits.

I use a lot of picture books to model the traits for my kids. Here is a fabulous resource for 6-traits writing--"Picture Books: An Annotated Bibliography for Teaching Writing". Have fun!
