late work
By Beth

Clip to ScrapBook
Something that works for me is "Friday Phonecalls". I make the due date for most assignments a Wednesday. This gives students one day to be late - Thursday. If I don't get the work by Friday morning, I call home (or if
there is time at the phone, I get the student to call). I also report spelling results, test results and daily assignment results if I call home so they really want to avoid the phone call if possible. When I initiate the calls there may be up to six or eight students who require a call. After a week or two there may be only 2 or 3 and then there will be Fridays with no calls. Parents
really appreciate the update. Students end up having to toil on their weekend and therefore avoid the phone call like the plague. Parents know that if there is no call their child is keeping up to date and they can maintain their trust in them. At reporting time there tend to be no surprises for anyone. I deduct 10% for each day late so the student will likely only lose by 20%. Works well all around.
