I am a student teacher in NYC. My cooperating teacher does the same thing everymorning. Students read a book they borrowed independently and teacher does a running record on two to three students. In this way, teacher can check all students' reading progress throughout a week. This becomes each student's weekly evaluation. Students exchange books and read to others after independent reading. Students enjoy this time because they can read many books.
By the way, what does DEAR stand for?
