If you can, get a copy of The First Day of School by Harry Wong it is excellent. The main thing he stresses is to practice, practice, practice procedures. Show the class exactly what you expect them to do in the hallway, on the playground,in the cafeteria, and in class. Discuss your rules and the rewards and consequences.
Read a back to school book. Read a book about behavior or manners and then discuss what
you expect. I have a book about a bear. At his
school the teacher gave out bee stickers to remind the students to "BEE Good". I put a bee sticker on each of my students to remind them of
    the things we,ve discussed.
Begin an "All About Me" book. Take a sample
of their handwriting. THIS IS A SAMPLE OF MY BEST WRITING. Date it. Take a sample half way
through the year, and again at the end of the year. Put it in the porfolio or send it home in May.
I see my students at registration. I give them a white lunch sack and a paper with directions stating that each child should fill the bag with a few items telling who he/she is and then decorate the bag. On the first two days of school we share them. I show them that my bag is colored in hot pink and blue my favorite colors. Inside I put a family picture, a bear (because I collect them), a book, something relating to groups I belong to and this year I'll include a picture of myself at the computer since I've spent the summer learning to use it.
    Have a great first day.
