Good question By Monica

I'm 39 and am changing careers to become a teacher. I've had interviews, but no offers. I hope it's not because of my age, which I don't think is that old (and you're a mere infant at 32, as far as I'm concerned!) but I| guess you never know. I imagine there are some principals who prefer their new teachers young, just as there are supervisors in other fields who are resistant to the idea of hiring older people for entry-level positions. Maybe they think younger people will be more compliant, or that they'll have more energy, or if they're young themselves, they may be uncomfortable with the idea of | | supervising someone older. One principal I talked with (who wasn't interviewing me for a job, unfortunately) told me she thought my age worked in my favor. As she said, "You're not straight out of college, you've lived a little, you've gotten all those young-adult upheavals out of the way, you know yourself better, and you know what it means to be in the working world. " So I guess we geriatrics stand out because we're not what principals are used to. Whether or not that's a good thing depends on the principal!
