First Grade
By CA Teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
I do a lot of graphing the first weeks of school. I buy people shaped cut outs and have students decorate them. Then we use these to graph how many boys and girls we have in our class. We graph how many letters students have in their names after we read the book Crysanthemum. There are endless topics... how students come to school, eye color....

Another thing I like to do is to sing with my kids. It sort of calms them down. We sing "I Like to Go to School" to the tune of "The Farmer in the Dell." (I like to go to school. I like to go to school. Heigh-ho-the derry-o, I like to go to school.) I ask students to tell me the things they like about school, our classroom, first grade, and then we make up verses to go with their ideas.
