calming those nerves

First congratulations on getting your own classroom and your own kids. You have worked many years for this so breathe and have fun.

I agree with the other poster about finding a friend in the teachers you work with.
A good mentor will teach you the ropes and will show you what things you can get away with and what topics to avoid.

As for setting up your room. Take one of your bulletin boards and make it all about you. I did this last year and labeled it Meet Mrs. Young. I put pictures with captions from my childhood, and adulthood. I had this ready for meet the teacher night but I also left

it up the first week of school for those who did not make it that night. The children like to know that you are a real person. Next I suggest you buy a copy of First Year Jitters (not sure of author but search amazon to find) This is a wonderful story about a teachers first day jitters only as you read the story you don't realize it is the teacher until the story is over it is really really cute. This can spark a great discussion the first day of school.
