Be Careful
By Shannon

Clip to ScrapBook
Although I think it is important to get started on curriculum right away, be careful. This past year (my first year), I figured we would spend the first week on get to know you activities and going over rules/policies, then
the second week we would start on the regular work and schedule. However, one thing I didn't realize was that, as you start doing your regular curriculum, you still need to be teaching procedures. It's important to teach procedures (proper heading on your paper, how you pass out/pass in papers, specifics for that textbook, etc.) in a real-life curricular context. Don't just think
that because you went over then the first week during "Get to Know You Bingo" that they have all the procedures down.

As much as I thought get to know you and community building activities were a waste of time, they actually aren't. They help kids build a classroom community, and they get kids acclimated to your classroom and to a new school year.
