I agree with the fact that most colleges don't train you on the most important aspects of teaching. On the job training is the best training you can possibly get. I spend the first few days of school going over my class rules/procedures, doing some getting to know you type activities. I also do reading inventories during the first few days so I can prepare and begin my guided reading groups during the first full week of school. I too take pictures of my students on the first day of school. I usually get doubles made and I make a bulletin board out of one set and hold the second set for crafts that we make for holiday gifts.
