maths integration By Barb

Though not familiar with Saxon Math, i hope this might be of some help! counting the number of trees/animals etc in particular area and then multipling out how many would be in an area twice the size, tree times the size| etc. Something we did was to have the chn paint a mural of the bush/forest and give a point value to each idem in the scene. Then have the students toss a bean bag or simalar at the mural. Which ever idem the bag hit, the student would write down that value. Nice things to add are 'double your last score' spots and 'loose points' spots. After 5 'goes', the student then calculated their | | score. Have the children work in groups and then have the children make a graph of the points scored by everyone in the group. Perhaps even a class graph. Each group could calculate their own groups average and each group could then make their own 'class averages' graph. Anything that would use maths language would be appropriate. We use chalk on the playground to have students draw life size measurements of dinosaurs. Students are given the measurements of an object and then given a metre ruler and chalk and sent out in groups to draw their dinasour/or whatever you wish for them to draw. Students must acurately measure the lengths and 'create a life size dinosaur'. Whole class activitiy to check the measurements. This is a wonderful activity as it gives students an "in your face' look at larger then life objects. Best of luck to you!
