SFA By Katie

I understand where you are coming from, I don't check this board as often as other boards because it is ALL GR and F&P. If you are not reading the book this is not a very helpful page and all of the other posts about other| readings or ways of teaching quickly get buried. As for SFA, I taught SFA for a year and there are some benefits to it. First off it provides a lot of guidance for the teacher. Most of your lessons and materials are ready for you when it begins. I personally was not crazy about SFA because it was too scripted for my taste. I felt like a lot of my creative teaching was taken away | | by SFA. I left the school because I did not want to teach SFA anymore, but on an up note I did take some of the components with me and use them in my four-block approach. I do sight words from my stories that I am reading, I do the meaningful sentence in my writing program as well as an adventures in writing type of activity each week.I did see a tremendous amount of growth in my students while using SFA, I was never sure if this was because the program was so great or if it was because the entire school dedicated 90 minutes a day to reading. This type of commitment is bound to yield success. But yes my students did learn to read!!!! If you have any questions or comments about your feeling on SFA, please post. I would be very interested in having a reason to come back to this board!!
