calendar time
By Jacqui

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi, I teach 2nd. grade and use my calendar time each day to review the days of the week. I ask questions each day repeatedly,"What's the first day of the week?", "How many weeks are in a month?",etc. I also use money as an
equivalent to count the number of days in school.(180 - by June) Example: I drop a penny in a clear pouch each day. Every five days, we trade up to a nickel, and so forth.(you need 4 clear pouches for pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.) On the 100th day of school a whole dollar bill is stapled up on the bulletin board. This teaches money, place value, and counting by 5,s and ten's.
In addition, I have laminated 180 yellow, green and red apples. Each day an apple goes up around the room with the day on it. 1 - 180. Every tenth apple is RED, which visually shows how we can count by tens. My calendar time takes about 15 minutes every morning. Oh, almost forgot, I also add the numbers on a blank laminated 100's board so that the kids can count by 5's, and tens. Once we have reached the 100th day of school, we start erasing the 100's board numbers down until we reach 20, the LAST day of school ! Hope this helps. Jacqui
