first grade homework
By JJ

Clip to ScrapBook
I am going into my 3rd year teaching first grade. I have to keep to my school's policy of homework on Monday and Wednesday for every student, to build responsibility. Therefore, I sent home review work, handwriting, study
sheets, etc. In my class newsletters, I remind parents that students should read or be read to for 20 minutes every day. (We participate in the Pizza Hut Book-It Program.) When I send home a project, I usually attach a little note stating that this project will count as homework for Monday and Wednesday.

Usually, I only have the same 3 students who don't turn in their homework, or

turn it in late. If I notice this happening, I announce that if everyone brings in their homework, they will get a "treat". (Free time, educational game, etc.) I only do this every once in a while, when I notice the return rate dropping.

Some of my teacher friends tell me that I expect a lot from my students. However, I see other teachers that give homework every single day.....written worksheet type homework. Also, I've never had a parent complain yet. Most request additional things for their child to do. I work in a very needy area, and I am blessed with some very caring parents.

Sorry that this is so long. I can't wait to hear what other teachers do for homework.
