I went through the same thing last year, when I school wasn't finished being built yet. It is kind of a pain to have them in your room during your prep time, but you get use to it.

It actually is very handy. I had a few
kids who always wanted to help me, so I gave them little tasks that I would do, file graded papers, straighten library, put up bulletin board etc.
The other students who didn't want to help me, I had various things for them to do.
I had a puzzle at a table.
I have a large Boggle bulletin board that the students would play.
Computer time, I would have them play on Funbrain.
I

also do an activity, similar to Where's Waldo, but I have various pictures, I would say Where's the verb or noun, etc. The kids love this.
