how much info is too much?

Clip to ScrapBook
Last year I was snagged at the end of my internship (the Tuesday before Thanksgiving) to begin teaching the Monday after the Thanksgiving break (teacher shortage in my area). I was 21, and (so I'm told) looked 16. I didn't
come out and say that I was a first year teacher, although many of my students' parents knew. Most of my students figured it out or were told, but it wasn't an issue with them, really. I had a lot of trouble with parents, though, because I look so young. One parent shook his head every time he saw me and said "I can't believe you're so young. Are you sure you're old enough to do this?"
In front of my students! At the end of the year, though, he told me what a great job I'd done with his son.

Don't volunteer the information, but don't be ashamed, either. You've got a lot going for you--life experience AND a fresh, enthusiastic outlook as a new teacher! (I wish I'd had the life experience part.)
