My calendar time followed the same format as Julianne. I added one more thing before formally starting the day. I had about 10 flash cards that I "flashed" to the kids with sight words (I taught first grade). All eyes
were on me and even the kids who struggled benefited. You can do the flash cards for whatever is relevant for your class. As Kasey says observe what they need and make flash cards to help them through repetition.
Once you get your calendar routine down the first week of school you'll find it's very easy, direct and does help the students learn.
P.S. You'd be surprised at how many

kids don't know the months of the year in order. Every once in a while you may want to go through the months in order so the stragglers will remember them.
