pencil management
By myra stewart

Clip to ScrapBook
Students purchase special sized "first grade" pencils which I take right away, sharpen and place in a container. Since my students sit in desks of four and I use some cooperative techniques, each student is given 2 pencils and one eraser placed in a basket in the middle of the desks. These thicker pencils don't break so easily. When they do, I take the broken one and replace it with a sharpened one from my container of ready pencils. If the pencils break or are "lost" and I am not able to replace it right away, we have a plan in place to share within the group until I can take care of it. I tell them the pencil does not care who is using it, so it doesn't mind being shared! Hope this helps!
