The only way you can itemize your deductions you spend for your job is if you do a 1040A (long form). And mostly the only way it is profitable is if you own your own home and itemize your deductions for the house. Also,| I couldn't "write off" the expenses for school last year because it has to be a certain percent (and what I spent didn't meet that percent). I think the percent was based on your taxable income. If you are purchasing a new computer system for your home (even if you will use it for school) I really doubt you can count that- mainly because it's at home and will not be purchased soley for | | the purpose of your job. If you kept it at school and used it there, you might be able to legally write it off- but I'm not totally sure. Now, I do save receipts for the ink cartridges I use for printing things for school (I go through a lot of ink printing forms for school) and add those to my folder of school expenses. Anyway, I'm not a tax genius, but do know more than I used to since we bought our house 5 years ago. If you don't own your own home, (even if you're married) the standard deduction is going to be your best bet. Contact a cpa to find out for sure (tax laws change so much from year to year).
