When I started my job 2 years ago, I got my parapro's name and # from school and called her and asked her if she'd like to meet for lunch before school started to talk and get to know each other a bit. That helped us to get to know each other a bit personally so it was not so awkward right away. It also helped us feel each other out for our past experiences and styles. I asked her how the classroom had run with the previous teacher and what her role was then. Then I shared some of my ideas. Since she had been there for several years and it was my first year, I took some time to learn from her as the year started and slowly we both began defining our roles together. Good luck!
