Two years ago our school started using Saxon Math in K-2. At first I did not like it bacause it is so structured. Our adopted text was Harcourt Brace. We had also attended the DMI workshops and used the investigations kits. Personally, our grade level HATED investigations. So this is what we did. For a year we followed Saxon Math lesson by lesson in first grade. We used their calendar and their manipulatives. Occasionally we would pull out the Harcourt Brace, on those short weeks when we didn't want to pull out those Saxon Lessons. We used the ideas we got from investigations, and we could have used it more, but we didn't want to. The kids love Saxon, the parents love Saxon and even our teachers now love Saxon. Just wait until you get used to the program, I am sure you will like it. Remember that your textbooks are just your tools, you can use them however, to teach the objective you want to teach and that you are required to teach. At least that is what our principal tells us. Saxon is a good program, give it a shot.
