word wall
By vanessa

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi,

I teach grade one and I too introduce five new words each week. I cover these new words and add 3-5 words from the word wall on each test also. For these words the children may use the word wall to aid them. My goal
is to see if the children recognize these words. Therefore,if they encounter the word in the context of a story they will know it. Memorization (spelling) of the word is not essential for me or them (I don't think so anyway). I want them to be able to recognize the words and become familiar with them.Eventually they will be able to spell it independently. However, this may take practice.
I feel, why cover the word wall and totally frustrate many children who may not get help from home, may have visual memory probelms, learning disabilities etc. by frustrating them. Maybe it is different for grade two. However, I don't think I am harming my kids by allowing them to "cheat". My intention is that they become familiar with the sight words. I hope this makes sense and if I am way out of my league, I apoligize.

Vanessa
