Gilly swearing
By Judy

Clip to ScrapBook
The swearing that Gilly uses is part of her character. It's also part of the literature. Instead of making a big deal out of the swear words in the book I allow the students to decide if they want to say the word, skip it or use a substitute. Most skip it except for a few rowdy boys and if I know that a bad word is coming up in that passage I don't pick a rowdy boy to read that passage. By not getting excited about the word, the kids don't get excited either.
