There is no quick and easy answer to this question, I don't think. My experience has been that this is a challenge you must work with every day of the school year. It is only over time that these kids will buy into the idea that you and their classmates care about and value them as individuals. I'd recommend reading Ruby Payne's Framework of Poverty, also look into Expeditionary Learning and Rick Dahlgren's Time to Teach model. I work a team building activity and/or class meeting into every day. It is time consuming, but I've found the 15-20 minute investment in this kind of activity pays great rewards throughout the rest of the day. Good luck!
