I do not give an abundance of homework but when I do give it, it is meaningful and reinforces what we are learning. Therefore, my students are held accountable for their homework or they have consequences if they choose not to do it! Third graders are not babies anymore and must learn responsibility! I do not "grade" the homework but do check it and return it to the student. If they are having difficulty then I pull them aside to work individually with them. If the majority is having difficulty then I will reteach the material. Just make sure you aren't giving homework just to give homework. It must be meaningful! And yes, they DO need to be held accountable!
