I have taught kindergarten as well as 2nd grade. In each class I had hermit crabs as the class pet. They were amazed at how the animal would spend so much time in its shell. I also had a betta in my class; which requires little to no work at all. You will be able to have both of these animals with minamal work. Good luck and I hope this has helped.
