    measuring growth

You have a pre-test in place. This is a good thing. Now you can teach the curriculum as it was designed and prepare your students for the post-test. Your evaluation as their teacher should be reflected in the growth between the two scores. If the bulk of your students improve their scores significantly, or even a little bit, given the time frame you're talking about, I would think you are a success. The real test of student learning is to compare the same student to themselves, not students in general to an external guideline. Since this is a summer program and you were hired late I don't think anyone could expect you to perform educational miracles. (Of course, I am an eternal obtimist )
