I teach Pre-K in a public school and we too use the Brigance for assessment when they start and when they end the school year with us. My supervisor agrees with me that this is not appropriate assessment for this age group. I use portfolios to document the physical, cognitive, social and emotional aspects of each child. I do this by keeping pictures they have drawn (samples of scribbling through representational drawings) or handwriting (when they begin letter like forms). The best tool is a camera (first get parent permission for documentation purposes). When the children begin my class I take a photo of them and write down their height and weight. I glue this on the front of a large 11X14 manilla envelope and in January and May I do the same to document physical growth. (Boy, do they grow up fast!) I take pictures of block structures, dramatic play, and social interactions. I also photograph them working puzzles, sorting, grouping, and classifying objects and other math skills they aquire throughout Pre-K. These wonderful portfolios are great for Parent-Teacher Conferences and the parents are so happy to get them at the end of the year.
