I adapted this idea, from a proteacher mailring discussion, several years ago..this will be my third year using it. My parents, as a whole, really seem to like it, some of course never even look at it. It is a lot of trouble
but you are also doing a "CYA" and at the end of the year parents cannot come back at you with "I didn't know....(whine)".
Both years I used three ring notebooks...last year brought from Big Lots @ 2 for $1.00. Year before $.68 at Wal Mart. They do hold up better than the three prong folders and hold more.
I include a copy of first grade curriculum(state),our school and county

handbooks,Sight Word List students are expected to be able to read by JUne, Inspirational poems and articles for parents, a copy of the school's yearly calendar, I insert a monthly calendar with special dates noted, I include weekly newsletters with special emphasis on what we will be studying that week and naming our spelling words for the week, In my newsletters I sometimes include little thumbnail pictures of students at work in class or on field trips (have a digital camera on hand frequestly), I punch holes in pocket folders (w/o prongs) and label them Homework...in that I insert my weekly Homework Assignments and use the pockets to insert worksheets/paper etc that may be needed for the weeks assignments) My homework is an idea I got from a participant in proteacher..I use Tic Tac Toe format..child must do three in a row (9 boxes) and two more...their choice..have from Monday until the following Monday to do it. I have heavyduty pockets for library books, I have regualr plastic pockets for newsletters, calendars etc.
One parent, at the end of school last year, begged me to make a notebook for each of her other children to begin school with in the fall....I told her I could not do that because of expense and also because other teachers had different requirements and ways of doing things.
The first year I made a powerpoint presentation and on Pre-registration night had it looping on both computers in my classroom and had a couple of sample notebooks available for them to look through. The first year I actually drew cartoon MOOSE heads on the front of the notebook and added the child's name...the next year (different kind of binder) I justr wrote the child's name on the front and added Mail address labels with MOOSE etc on it...This year I am using black binders with the vynal pocket so I can slip in a fancy cover and am creating one to insert.
