Morning Routine
By lah

Clip to ScrapBook
I have been using [this] routine with my 3rd grade class for the past 2 years. It works amazingly well. I have had guest teachers remark on how well my students get focused for the day and begin working without any prompting.

1.
Unpack bag and put bag away.

2. Turn in homework or notes from home.

3. Sharpen pencils.

4. Choose your lunch. Each of my students have a magnet with their name on it. They place the magnet under a label marked Hot Lunch or Cold Lunch.

5. Begin your morning work. [D.O.L., review worksheet, practice flashcards, reading]

Magnets:
I purchased a box of hard

plastic baseball card protectors. I stuck a magnet strip on the back of each holder. Next, I cut paper to fit into. At the beginning of the school year each students gets to decorate 2 magnets (They must put their first name in large print on the front.)

I use one set of magnets for the lunch count and the other set for various tasks i.e. student-teacher conferences (writing, "I need help" sign-up, Computer sign-up. This has really helped lessen the amount of down time as a result of waiting for me. The students can post their magnet then return to work or reading.
