Just one more thought

After talking with a colleague about my post on how I "get" grades, I happened to remember something important. Since I have my students in both 4th and 5th grade, I usually don't grade the lit response letters from my 4th graders--at least not during the first semester. I want them to feel comfortable just sharing what they are thinking as they are reading. It's only later after many minilessons on both content of the letter, format for a friendly letter, and mechanics that I expect to assign a grade to their responses.
