I love Beverly Cleary! You have to do a Ramona book -- I like Ramona the Pest, Ramona and Her Father and Ramona Quimby, Age 8. For fourth grade, I would probably do Ramona Quimby, Age 8, since she is closer
You really can't go wrong with Cleary. If you are going to do an author study of Cleary, I highly recommend getting the Beverly Cleary Handbook by Joanne Kelly. You can get it from Libraries Unlimited. It is an excellent resource. It has some great biographical and setting information, including pictures of the actual houses and places mentioned in the books. It also includes a map of Ramona's and Henry's neighborhood with key places marked. In addition, it has synopsis of all of Cleary's works except Ramona's World which was the last book she wrote. Bulletin Board ideas, activities for individual books or complete studies of her works, and so much more is in this book. It is well worth the price. I cannot recommend it highly enough. We do a timeline of Cleary's life and find the similarities between her books and life. For an example see http://www.booknutsreadingclub.com/cleary1.html and click on Beverly Cleary Timeline. Another resource book for author study is Beverly Cleary by Teacher Created Materials. It is mostly activity sheets and ideas for different books, though. If you can only afford one resource book, get the one above. The Beverly Cleary Website has some good info, ideas and clip art. I took one clip art of Ramona and made a character map for her. I did it on 8 X 11 for the students to do one. I had one blown up to a 24 X 36 at Kinkos and laminated to use in class. It turned out great. We also do "Wanted" posters for a character using descriptions and incidences from Cleary's books. Hope that helps. Lori
