Homework By Anna

I teach 5th, but the general rule for homework is 10 minutes for each grade level- that would make 40 min. a night for your kiddos. Now, I always give time after a lesson for kids to start working(they usually have at least| 10 min. after I stop instruction to start so I can walk around the room and see who needs extra help), and I offer a 20 min. designated study hall at the end of each day for students to work on homework. I say that I don't assign specific homework, homework is just classwork that was not completed during the day. I never give really long assignments, usually just a few problems after | | a lesson or a quick writing assignment to check for mastery. I always tell my students though, that if they don't use all the class time given, they will find that their homework increases w/ each sujbect taught during the day. It tries to start instilling time on task. See what other teachers in your level to do to give you some idea of what is generally accepted in your school. Some schools have specific guidelines (Monday- math Tuesday- reading, etc) and some schools say only 20 min. regardless of grade level. Best to check and find out, so you're not giving too much or too little. Good luck
