study skills By Susan/5th/MS

I taught study skills in college for 5 years, and then I started teaching 8th graders last year. I basically taught them the same things: 1. Organization - Having a binder with tabbed dividers for each subject and a pouch that goes in it with supplies. 2. Time Management - Have them keep a record for a week of where their time goes. It helps them see the difference between not HAVING the time to study and not MAKING the time to study. Then teach them to schedule time for homework, studying, etc... just like they schedule for play. Rule of thumb is 10 min. a night per grade level (1st grade is | | 10 min. a night, 2nd grade is 20 min., 6th grade would be 60 min., etc...). They need to keep a planner or calendar. 3. Note-taking - Using the Cornell method (2 column) for easier studying later. I model it on the board, and have them do it on paper. Teach abbreviation methods, too (w/=with). 4. SQ3R - Study reading method - we practice with other textbooks to learn how to do it. It stands for survey, question, read, recite, & review. 5. Learning styles - give them each a test to see what their learning style is (visual, auditory, or tactile). Then give pointers on using that effectively or adjusting when it's not an option.Of course, there's much more to it, but that's the basis of what I taught. It seemed to help my 8th graders going into the highschool.
