discipline
By Peg

Clip to ScrapBook
Jennifer, I feel your pain. I remember way back in 1979 when I started teaching and scrambled for the first few years trying to find the balance between keeping control, earning their respect and getting them to like me.
Eventually, you will gain enough experience to trust yourself. I am very firm and consistent. I create rules with the students and go over the steps in my discipline plan. I then make sure I follow it fairly...for every student. I have a reward system that I use as well, and this allows them to see that I notice when they do things right, as well. My students generally like me a lot because
I am confident in my methods, and because of this I can have fun with them. I love to joke with them and make them laugh. I try to teach them that we can have a good time as long as we are in control and can get refocused. Humor goes a long way in the classroom. They especially like when I laugh at my own mistakes. Don't fear. It will come to you in time, just like it comes to most teachers.
