Jennifer, I feel your pain. I remember way back in 1979 when I started teaching and scrambled for the first few years trying to find the balance between keeping control, earning their respect and getting them to like me.| Eventually, you will gain enough experience to trust yourself. I am very firm and consistent. I create rules with the students and go over the steps in my discipline plan. I then make sure I follow it fairly...for every student. I have a reward system that I use as well, and this allows them to see that I notice when they do things right, as well. My students generally like me a lot because | | I am confident in my methods, and because of this I can have fun with them. I love to joke with them and make them laugh. I try to teach them that we can have a good time as long as we are in control and can get refocused. Humor goes a long way in the classroom. They especially like when I laugh at my own mistakes. Don't fear. It will come to you in time, just like it comes to most teachers.
