rubric use

I love using rubrics for grading writing, special reports, etc. because it makes it so much faster to grade. My problem is converting the rubric to a grade in my grade program. There are so few points on most rubrics that missing one key element REALLY penalizes the child. What do you do to help in this situation? Do you weight each section? I struggle with this.
