Calendar Time
By Jenn

Clip to ScrapBook
Calendar time can be great for third graders! You can use this time to review (obviously) number of days in a week, weeks in a year, days in a year, days in a month, etc. You can create patterns on your calendar using different
color number cover-ups. Of course, you can do place value to count the number of days you've been in school ( three plastic cups, straws and rubber bands). Do a money amount of the day in a money pocket chart and have a helper write the amount. Practice writing the date in long and short form. Fractions can be taught (one week has passed in this month which has four weeks. What fraction
tells how many weeks are remaining? 3/4) Use graphing activities to graph the weather (sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, snowy, etc.) graph the number of birthdays in each month, high temperatures each day. Do different kinds of graphs so your students can become accustomed to them all.You can do a state of the day and locate in on a U.S. map. Poetry can be incorporated, I'm especially thinking of the rhyme to remember the number of days in each month (Thirty days hath September..) And you can always incorporate your daily Spanish into this time be having children sing the days of the week, months of the year, etc. in Spanish.
