I teach in Australia so I had to answer this question. This year is the Year of the Outback in Australia. The teacher next door teaching year 1 and myself with 2's have decided to spend the whole year doing Australia. Our| school year runs Feb-Dec so we are only half way through. In first term we looked at the Ocean surrounding Aust. The Great Barrier Reef etc. We did a big display of what was found in the ocean. I put up an old fishing net and hung fish, octopus, jellyfish etc. My large wall display had crabs, many types of fish. We read the Rainbow Fish book and made a fish with a shiny scale. Term 2 we | | looked at vrious animals. One a week. There are some fantastic books on emus. Australia has some very unusual animals. The children have loved doing the animals so much they wish to continue. When we have finished this we are moving on to plants and the Aboriginal people. We are also going to look at the cities around Australia. A very good way to look at Australia is through our literature. Mem Fox has some fantastic children's books. Koala Lou, Possum Magic(covers Aus. food and cities.) etc are fantastic. We studied a book a week and then were lucky enough to go to a performance of 10 of her books. She read 2 and the others were acted out. I could write for hours if you wish, email me and I will give you a list of sites that may help. All the best it is a fantastic subject. Children love learning about others.
