Here's what I know about postings in my district...
My own school has at least 5 classroom teaching positions for next year. On the district's job postings section, our school only appears to have 1 opening. Some jobs
are filled internally with transfers...someone transfers then their position at their school will then be open. Another reason some of the jobs are not posted yet is that before a job can be posted, the teacher must resign and then that resignition must be approved by the school board. The school board only meets every other Monday. So a job can be available but it won't be posted for two

weeks depending on when the person resigned. What I'm trying to say is that there are probably more jobs available than what is actually posted. Keep checking local districts webpages for listings. Also make sure to take your resume to each school that your interested in and introduce yourself to the principal. The principals around here are starting back on either Monday or the following Monday.
Another thing to think about is that some teachers will resign right before school starts. Maybe they're waiting on another job. There seems to be so much shifting around this time. Hang in there. Practice those interview skills and get your resume out there. You can be assertive without being pushy!
I know what you mean about Universities and all the help you get from them when it comes to getting a teaching job. My University didn't help me get a job or even interviews--I did that on my own. But by getting a job, I helped that percentage of graduates who got jobs which makes the University look good. Go figure!
