The key, Jay, is to set expectations from the beginning. Decide before you ever meet those kids how you want to run your classroom. We're all different- do whatever makes you comfortable and fits with your personality. My mentor told me once to make my students fear me- it works for her, but not for me! On that first day, make sure your kids know that you're in charge, and you have rules in order to help everyone learn. Have consequences, and act on them the first time you need to. Blow a few things off and the kids will ignore your rules. When it comes down to it, pick and choose those things from that list that make you happy. P.S. Principals have all been teachers too- yes, they know quite a bit! Not all are perfect by any means, but some have a ton of great advice as experienced teachers!
