I just try not to get all hung up on the fact that I have to spend my own money. At first thought, it seems really irksome that this is the only profession where you have to pay for your own supplies. But then you realize that you personally don't have a lot of power to change this, and that if you want to stay in this profession you might as well accept that you'll have to spend money. Getting mad doesn't help much.

They say that teachers spend about $2000 per year on supplies for their classrooms. This breaks down to $200 per month, or $50 per week. Some weeks I spent this much, for sure. However, I saw it as my gift to my needy students. These kids didn't have anything at home, so spending 5% of my salary on them didn't seem like a big deal.
