1st week of school in 3rd grade

Clip to ScrapBook
One activity that I have the students complete is to design a cupcake. I give them the pattern and then they decorate it. I'll have a graph on the bulletin board with each month listed going across the bottom. On the left side I have numbers, usually based on the number of birthdays for a total month. (I've checked this beforehand.) Then the students come up and glue their cupcakes above their birthday month. We then use the graph for a variety of math problems throughout the months. One assignment is for the students to duplicate a paper version of the graph that they can keep in their notebooks. One question I ask, Which months have an equal number of birthdays? The children come up with great observations on their own.
