    Reading Logs

My students are required to get their reading log signed by a parent each night. This shows that they fulfilled the required 20 minutes of reading. I then hand out tickets for students to put their names on. At the end of the week, I have several drawings. I do a can of pop, a pack of gum, a book (using my points from book orders), and a Blow Pop. The kids look forward to the drawings. I had a high academic group last year and it worked well. If students didn't have their log signed, they sat out recess. After a few days of this, I had maybe one kid a day who had to st out recess for not getting his log signed. He could never find it anyway! I have parents who donate things to our class. So when they ask what I need, I ask for Blow Pops, Dum-Dums, 12 packs of pop, etc. that can be used in the drawing. I try to balance the reward and consequence with the logs. Hope this helps!
