Once each term, I have a reading challenge connected to a theme we're doing in class. (e.g. Reading to the Moon, Reading Across the Country, Reading Olympics,etc). They must read each night and record their reading selection and minutes, signed by a parent. Prizes are given (pencils, flags,computer time, free time,etc.) for anyone who meets the challenge and an extra prize for anyone who goes beyond. The kids really like it and it's a shorter activity with a specific goal which seems to keep them motivated.
