valuable time is lost with discipline, etc. I don't know your entire situation, but it seems to me that the principal has seen that you can't control your class. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ How do you control an obnoxious class without yelling your lungs out? You can't slap them. You can't do much other than write up referrals or stay after with them (some of us have other thigns to do). I still say PRINCIPALS should be getting on the phone and calling some parents! Some students lack self control which makes your job so difficult. Yes some teachers are strong personality types that seem to get results based on their voice than pierces through the student noise.
