In my school, and in many others, the Guided Reading block is NOT taught whole group. 4 Blocks stands for Guided, Writing, Self- Selected Reading, and Working with words. Our guided reading block BEGINS whole class with a mini-lesson focusing on an area of comprehension. Then comes the flexible grouping, (guided and literacy centers). We then conclude with a whole class discussion.
"Guided" is guiding a group of children with their reading in a small group, focusing on specific needs of that group. How does one teach whole group during this block?
