Reading Contract
By Tammy

Clip to ScrapBook
I was scrolling through messages and found yours. I realize it's been awhile since you posted this, but I thought I would share what has worked for me. I have taught every grade from 3rd to 7th, and this has worked at every
level. It's easily adaptable.
Part of the student's grade is based on a weekly contract which I provide a copy on a half sheet of paper each week. I write the grades on this sheet also. There are five things that the students are responsible for: (1)keeping a daily reading log, (2) reading a specified # of pages/books per week (based on personal goals), (3) reading at home (requires
parent initial)4 nights for 15 minutes, (4) completing 2 assigned reading responses in the reading journal, and (5) completing a skills page. The skills page is attached to the contract, and both are distributed on Monday. The students are responsible for keeping them in a reading folder, which is turned in on Friday (along with the reading log and journal). The skills page can be anything that you are working on in class or the students are struggling with.
Each of the five items are worth 20 points. I score each separately and add the total. I hope this isn't too confusing, and maybe it will be something that will work for you. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.
